About the CPCA - Neighbourhood History

Copeland Park is a family-oriented community located in College Ward 8, in the west end of the city. Prior to amalgamation it formed part of Nepean. Development here started in the late 1950s and early 1960s by A.B. Taylor Construction Ltd., with the first home built in 1956. In the 1970s, Castle Hill, a 21-storey high-rise, was built by Minto at the corner of Castle Hill Crescent and Clyde Avenue. During that same decade, construction of homes and townhouses continued, adjacent to small areas of mature woods with access to the N.C.C. recreational pathway.

This neighbourhood is one of the older developments in Ottawa, with many stunning, mid-century modern, architect-designed homes. Many are single-detached with good-sized yards. During the 1970s, three 12-storey mid-rise condominiums were built on Baseline Road at Clyde Avenue, by Assaly Martin Developments.

The Community Association

The association’s official name is the Copeland Park Community Alliance (CPCA). It was formed in the late 1980s, registered provincially as a not-for-profit corporation.

The CPCA was originally created in response to the proposed development of the land east of Clyde Ave., which is now Central Park. Originally, that land was divided into the eastern section to be developed by the Regional Municipality of Ottawa-Carleton, and the western section to be developed by the Assaly Corporation. It became clear that some of the aspects of the proposed developments could have adverse effects on Copeland Park, if left unchallenged. The major objective of the CPCA was to ensure that the best interests of the community were represented and defended.

Since its inception, the CPCA has done much to ensure the integrity of our neighbourhood. With the increased pressure for intensification and infilling across the City, perennial traffic issues, and other matters with the potential to impact our community, the need for a vigilant CPCA will continue.

And now…

The population of Copeland Park in 2019 was approximately 4,150. The area comprises 0.809 km2 (0.312 sq mi.) with an elevation of 95 m (312 ft).

Our neighbouring associations are: Carlington Park, Central Park, and Skyline to the east, CityView to the south, and BelAir to the west.

Our City Councillor is Rick Chiarelli (College Ward 8).

We are part of the Ottawa West-Nepean electoral district. Our Member of Provincial Parliament is Conservative Jeremy Roberts. Our federal Member of Parliament is Liberal Anita Vandenbeld.
